Description This thesis explores the benefits of tangible user interfaces (TUI) in the context of a certain application and demonstrates the abilities and attributes of this tangible interaction through a practical project. The author presents outstanding features and characteristics, interaction models and terminologies as well as some real life examples to discuss the functionality and advantages of this interface concept. This concept of a physical interaction for an interactive learning and experimentation platform uses the characteristics of the TUI for media based learning, in order to build up cognitive structures by simultaneous demand of mental and motor abilities. The concept contains, next to the design of the control interface and its functions, a creative discussion of the topic in the context of a concrete project. The practical project covers an interactive installation for the simulation of simple electric circuits and switching types by the combination of different material construction units. Fundamental values such as voltage, amperage, resistance and power of an electric circuit can be calculated interactively, in order to make characteristics and connections of electricity visible. The simple and intuitive interaction gives users the possibility to experiment risk free with electricity in order to build up their knowledge or solve tasks.
