Description Album: Gulag Orkestar 2006 A great alternative-folk album that came out of left-field in the 2006 music scene mixing eastern european folk music, lo-fi, neo-psychedelic, and indie rock. It's hard to compare Zach Condon's (Beirut) music to anything else out there (which is a good thing), except maybe Denver's Devotchka. His musical style combines the best of indie pop's melodic and whimsical textures and the multi-instrumentalism of American and European folk music in order to make an otherwise obscure sound more palatable. Even though he's only been around for a few years, I can see him developing into an even better musician. Just picture yourself waltzing with the love of your life on a bright and sunny day in the middle of quaint little rural town in France or Italy without a care in the world, band playing music in the street, and maybe you'll get the feel of this album. Kudos to Ba Da Bing! for releasing this music. Go buy the rest of his albums too! My personal favorites are Scenic World Prenzlauerberg Postcards from Italy
